The building Biopôle III in Epalinges is situated in the biosciences technology park in northern Lausanne, near a metro station on the M2 line. The new building offers over 5,300 m² of floor space for specialist companies from the biology and medicine sectors, but also for information technologies, nutrition technologies, microtechnologies and nanotechnologies. It has been awarded the Minergie label and is dimensioned for 250 employees.
From the integration of the building into the site, to its volume and its relationship with its immediate surroundings, through to the incorporated selection of construction methods and products, everything was conceived with a view to maximizing environmental compatibility. The design of the glass/metal facade and the concrete cornice make reference to the existing buildings in the immediate vicinity and create a dialog between old and new.
One of the owner's main requirements was that a facade be realized which complies with the Minergie standard on the one hand and which guarantees maximum flexibility with regard to the interior design on the other hand. Triple glazing extends over the full height, so as to make optimal use of daylight and to benefit from the view of the lake and the neighboring forest. Efforts were made to achieve the most compact volume possible and a bio-climatic architecture was chosen (water heating, minimal air conditioning and reduction of the energy required for air conditioning).
The basic fit-out, executed by a general contractor, was completed in January 2011, which was 12 months after the ground-breaking ceremony. The building is subdivided into four modules on three levels. Each module offers space for a research area and an administration area.
