Burckhardt+Partner are renovating the four-floor ward block A of Thun Hospital in five stages and extending the existing intensive care unit. The renovation will create ideal conditions for the provision of modern medical care in Thun and the wider region.
Besides substantially upgrading the interior, the remodeling process will also modernize the building services of the ward block, which was inaugurated in 1987 with seven wards. It took a considerable amount of planning and coordination to ensure that the hospital will be able to operate without interruption for the full five-year construction period.
The quality of patients’ stay will be enhanced by the addition of single rooms for privately insured patients on the top floor and the reduction from four- to two-bed rooms for patients with statutory health insurance. The design concept involving a different color scheme for the rooms and corridors on each floor helps patients and staff find their way around more easily. The colors and materials have been chosen to create a homey atmosphere that supports the patients’ recovery process.
The intensive care unit is being completely rebuilt and extended with the addition of a new, single-story timber construction on what was previously the ground-floor terrace. The renovation will also improve earthquake protection: New walls are being added in the staircases and lift cores to reinforce the structure of the building in the long term.
The conversion and modernization of the building services will bring the ward block up to the very latest standards and thus extend the service life of the building. The renovation will be concluded at the end of 2022 with the completion of the private ward on the fourth floor.
