New headquarters building SKAN, Allschwil

Burckhardt+Partner have created a representative company headquarters for SKAN AG - a pioneer companies in the field of cleanroom equipment and isolator design for the global pharmaceutical industry. The concept and design of the new building reflect the company's highly developed and unique products.

The new headquarters is situated in the Bachgraben commercial zone in Allschwil and unites SKAN's diverse requirements under one roof. The modern structure encompasses working environments with a nuanced design, utilizable in variable and individualized ways, along with spatial layering that creates short communication routes and multifaceted visual links between production, office and lounge areas.

The new building's spatial concept is based on a compact stacking of different uses, which achieves equality between the individual functional areas. Organized within this vertical arrangement, there are two basement floors with parking garages, a two-story first floor that is equipped with mezzanines and comprises both the production area and the company's in-house academy, and two upper floors with office landscapes, a cafeteria and laboratories. The nuanced shape of the office environment offers naturally lit communal areas and places of retreat, as a setting between open and contemplation spaces. This also includes the green lounge courtyards embedded in the building. An intelligent primary structure enables the company to respond flexibly to changing requirements in the future.

The look is clear and balanced, with a defining industrial character. The materials used and the color scheme create an aesthetic proximity to the products of SKAN AG. The expressive load-bearing framework enables a column-free production hall and is visible in the facade. The interior steel supports appear through the glass skin. The material and structural properties, as well as the visual linking of floors, emphasize the stacked volumes, which indicate the various uses via their nuanced appearance.
