New laboratory and office building for IAP PYCO, Wildau

Urban planning
By means of its main entrance, this compact building, based on a rectangular floor plan, is oriented toward Schmiedestraße, which is a short distance from the Aerospace Technology Center and the establishments that cooperate with PYCO. In the southeast, the building directly joins the existing technical center Technikum 2. As developments in science and research are difficult to predict, the new building had to leave all options open. This is achieved by its compact structure, entirely within the northwest section of the property.

The Polymer Materials and Composites (PYCO) research division of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research (IAP) develops highly cross-linked polymers. Here, the focus is on developments for use in fields such as lightweight construction, e.g. using layered composites and sandwich structures. With this as our inspiration, it was important for us to develop a building that conveys lightness. The materials used (polycarbonate, sheet metal and glass) represent this lightness. The horizontal structure of the facade, comprising these three materials, brings to mind light construction's frequently recurring theme of layering.
