New laboratory building for advanced spin engineering, Kaiserslautern

In order to gain a better understanding of known spin-based applications and to enable new technological developments, a new research building is to be built at TU Kaiserslautern: the Laboratory for Advanced Spin Engineering (LASE).The realization of desired interdisciplinary synergies from four departments (Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical and Process Engineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering) is to be made comprehensively possible for the first time by housing them all in this research building. Thus, scientists from all departments involved in LASE will work together in each of the five planned laboratory units.

The urban planning concept provides for a compact structure that, with its cubature and its location on the site, incorporates the scale of the existing institutional buildings on the one hand and also refers to existing infrastructural systems on the other hand. The structure itself develops over two stories, on which another story is placed in the eastern area to stagger the construction volume. The existing topography is exploited in such a way that the building appears as only a one-or-two-story building on the higher street Gottlieb-Daimler-Straße and as a two-or-three-story building opposite the taller buildings. This design of the construction volume subtly mediates between the different heights of the surrounding buildings. At the same time, a prelude is created for the concluding development in the south of the campus.

The individual laboratory units are treated as closed volumes that are "surrounded" by the "open" uses, e.g. corridors, combination zones and kitchenettes, as well as the corresponding office areas, in such a way that these ancillary areas take on great significance with regard to the required exchange of information between the individual disciplines. It is precisely these areas between the closed laboratory blocks that constitute the necessary open locations, where the essential exchange of knowledge takes place. Thus, the content and results of the research become transparent and everyone becomes able to access and experience them.
