The Biopôle life sciences campus near Lausanne is home to over a hundred companies, innovative start-ups and institutions with a total combined workforce of around 1700. A new development is needed to provide the campus with additional office and laboratory space. It must also be adaptable enough to flexibly meet the needs of the various tenants in the long term and harmoniously blend in with the existing campus architecture.
Burckhardt+Partner’s design consists of three buildings of seven to nine floors, linked by a shared base, whose open structure seeks to embrace the landscape. Green outdoor spaces are interspersed between the three buildings, providing a high-quality environment for social meeting points.
These spaces look out over the surrounding landscape and the Alps, incorporating the local environment into the design.
The lightness of the building ensemble is enhanced by the understated façade design with large glass windows. The ceramic strips also serve to make the new buildings blend in with the existing campus architecture. The ceramic façade is both aesthetically appealing and highly durable, ensuring a consistent appearance long-term.
The interior fit-out of the overall building structure provides the highest degree of flexibility, enabling the internal space to be adapted in response to both the specific requirements of highly specialized life sciences companies and technical developments in this field. The intelligent primary structure means the developer can rent both small spaces as well as one or more floors individually and equip them to meet specific user requirements.
