New scientific competence center campus Biopôle, Epalinges

The scientific competence center on the Biopôle campus is one of the strategic sites in the PALM agglomeration program for the Lausanne-Morges region. Our project constitutes the final part of the campus's northern section and emphasizes the special situation on the escarpment. The new buildings complete the range of uses of the campus as a whole and contain research laboratories intended for the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research (LICR) and Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) in particular.
Our design presents a solution for the complex local infrastructure, meeting the requirements of the space allocation plan while also being able to adapt to future technological and methodological developments in research.

By means of architectural and spatial quality, not only are representative spaces for formal and informal exchange between different research groups created, but also places for interactions between the world of science and the public. Like in a neighborhood, our design also envisages various public spaces, such as roads, squares and promenades, which structure the campus and generate an urban atmosphere for the scientists on site. With its 200-meter-long base construction, the structure quite naturally anchors itself in the topographical situation and simultaneously offers a view of Lake Geneva and the Alps.

In order to establish a high-quality environment, special attention is also paid to aspects on a much smaller scale. This is why smaller cubatures are deliberately chosen for the service buildings, including the crèche, restaurant, fitness studio and exhibition room. The outdoor spaces, such as playgrounds, recreation areas and interior courtyards, also produce a friendly ambience.
The building dimensions are oriented toward the scale of day-to-day life, thus lending the campus an atmosphere that harmoniously combines working life and private life.
